Roosevelt Action Executive Director Luke Hilgemann released the following statement today after the Iowa House of Representatives Judiciary Committee voted 13-8 to advance a bill that enshrines the Right to Hunt and Fish in the state’s Constitution (HJR-2):

“For too long, hunters and anglers have seen their rights trampled on by activists who want to end these treasured American traditions as we know it. Today’s action to advance this critical resolution proves there are legislative leaders in Iowa willing to fight for the rights of all outdoorsmen and women. I want to thank Rep. Dean Fisher, lead author, and Rep. Taylor Collins, floor manager of the bill, as well as House Speaker Pro Temp John Wills for their diligent work advancing this critical legislation.

“Hunting is conservation. Hunters and anglers spend billions of dollars annually on conservation efforts that help to preserve endangered wildlife habitats. Protecting these fundamental freedoms is crucial to preserving and expanding access for the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts carrying on our traditions.”

The International Order of T. Roosevelt recently launched a six-figure digital advertising blitz to strategically reach hunters in four states, educating the public on their right to hunt. The campaign is active in Iowa, Ohio, Florida, and South Dakota – all states with strong hunting traditions that lack a constitutional right to hunt.
